Dating back to the first women’s day on March 8, 1911, it was established as – and continues to be – a day to strive for equality and applaud ladies for their social, political, economic, and cultural accomplishments.

They are nurturers, a listening ear when we need them, and our confidants. They are the women in our lives, ones who deserve to be celebrated. That is what International Women’s Day is all about. Dating back to the first women’s day on March 8, 1911, it was established as – and continues to be – a day to strive for equality and applaud ladies for their social, political, economic, and cultural accomplishments.   • Harriet Tubman A powerful woman of history who had the heart to serve others – even if it could have cost her life. Harriet Tubman was integral in helping 70 slaves escape to freedom via the Underground Railroad.   • Marie Curie Gifted in the area of science, the great mind of Marie Curie led her to pioneer research while accomplishing quite a few “firsts.” Not only was she the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, but she was also the first person to win two. And Curie didn’t stop there. She went on to eventually become the recognized in the fields of Physics and Chemistry for her work in radioactivity. These acclimations solidified the fact that women are great contributors to science.

  • Helen Keller At a mere 19 months old, Helen Keller contracted an illness that left her deaf and blind. Despite her handicaps and the lack of medical help in the late 1800s, Keller is one of the most powerful women of history who went on to be a female author, lecturer, and political activist. Her story is a reminder to defy the odds and rise above – even when it can be frustrating and require considerable effort.

  • Maya Angelou Although she was also known as a singer, actor, and political rights activist, Maya Angelou’s legacy of foremost being a poet lives on through her words of encouragement. As a poet, one of her most famous quotes, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” is a mantra for many.

  • Princess Diana Taken from earth too soon, Women’s day calls for remembering Princess Diana, who lived a simple life until she married Charles, Prince of Wales, in 1981. Not only did she do what was required of her position, but despite her duty-filled schedule, she was a wonderful mother. Diana served as a great woman philanthropist in history, working towards banning land mines and bringing awareness to leprosy. She also listened well and brought a smile to the faces of those who encountered her.

Today's Women Who are Making a Difference

Again, this list could be lengthy, but here are a few inspiring women we wanted to celebrate on International Women’s Day and beyond.

  • Barbara Walters As a very public figure, Barbara Walters seems to be someone who keeps ongoing. She started as a broadcast journalist who had a knack for interviews and then became the first woman to serve as a news program co-host. Her opinions are strong, but her staying power has proven more durable.

  • Sandra Day O’Connor No matter your political stance, it’s safe to say that Sandra Day O’Connor has been influential. As a retired, long-standing Supreme Court Justice, she was the first woman to serve on the Court. O’Connor has worked tirelessly to educate future generations about the government, including founding the website iCivics and her namesake foundation, the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute.

  • Ellen DeGeneres Over the years, the comedian and show host has shed stereotypes and become an activist. Ellen DeGeneres has a great heart for others and has brought attention to causes such as hurricane relief, abused animals, breast cancer research, and hunger awareness. She is also known for her quirky sense of humor.

  • Michelle Obama This former first lady had all eyes on her for eight years, which she went through with grace and ease. As a wife and mother, she is her family’s rock, yet she also focused on healthy school lunches and the education of adolescent girls during her tenure and beyond. Michelle Obama is a hardworking, classy, and powerful woman to the core.

  • Katherine Johnson – Although she passed recently, our list would not be complete without recognizing the behind-the-scenes contributions of Katherine Johnson, which is highlighted in the movie Hidden Figures. Johnson’s mathematical findings during her tenure at NASA were instrumental in the first successful space flights, and she was one of the first African-American women to serve in such a capacity.
