Fun Family Winter Activities to create memories!

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

Family portrait in winter

Winter can be a challenging time, but there’s still plenty of activities that you can enjoy during the coldest months of the year. Don’t let the cold freeze up the fun! Here are some fun family winter activities to inspire you and motivate you to get out there and make some memories.

Stay Home and Have a Blast

Baking cookies

If the weather outside is way too frightful to go on a winter adventure, stay home and make the best of it. There are plenty of fun family winter activities that you can enjoy with your loved ones right from the comfort of your own home.

Bake Cookies

You can’t go wrong if you make cookies at home!. Keep it simple and make Grandma’s family recipe together or spice things up and create your own at-home cookie competition! Break out the sprinkles, festive winter recipe ideas, and out-of-this-world flavors and compare your creations.

Fondue Party

You can create your own fondue party by making delicious cheese fondue recipe at home and dipping all kinds of goodies in the cheese. You can also make chocolate fondue, if your family has a sweet tooth!

Family Movies (Funny or Sweet!)

Share family comedy movies from the 90s your family. If your kids haven’t experienced the magic of kids movies from the 80s, they are in for a treat! Even teens will enjoy watching classic family rom-coms or scary movies with the whole family.

Indoor Scavenger Hunt Ideas

This is one of the most fun family winter activities on this list! Create an indoor scavenger hunt using everyday items, riddles, and prizes. Even if the prize is deciding what to make for dinner tonight, your kids will not soon forget the fun they had! One idea for a scavenger hunt is to take a unique item (the weirder - the better!) and hide it throughout the house. Whoever finds it is responsible for hiding it in a new spot. This is similar to the German Christmas pickle game and is a great way to keep the game going for weeks!

Blanket fort

Build a Fort

Build a blanket fort in your living room and enjoy snacks and share stories by the light of a camping lantern or flashlight. This activity is a chance to bring the lively conversation and ambiance of a camping trip right into your living room. Check out this video for some tips on how to build a blanket fort!

Paper Crafts

Learn how to make intricate origami creations or perfect your scrapbooking skills together! There are so many DIY crafts at home that require only paper, scissors, and a little glue and soon your family creations will come to life.

Of course, you can also have a great time in your backyard and enjoy fun family winter activities without getting stuck in traffic. Here are some of our favorite backyard activities:

Snowball fight

Snowball Fight

Who doesn’t love a snowball fight in the backyard? Split up into teams for the ultimate snowball fight showdown. Just be sure to come together when it’s all said and done and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa as a family.

Winter Picnic

Whether you can cook outside with a bonfire, grill, or outdoor pizza oven, you can create a winter picnic with home cooked foods right in your backyard. Just be sure to dry off your garden furniture for your winter day out.

Bonfire

There’s something so memorable about a campfire in winter. Build a winter bonfire with your family, take the opportunity to talk about fire safety, and roast marshmallows until you can’t possibly eat one more!

Make a Birdhouse

Head out to the garage or workshop and get busy building a birdhouse together. Or if you aren’t handy with a hammer, create a bagel bird feeder and enjoy watching the birds and squirrels go wild for their new treat. There are so many unique birdhouse ideas out there!

Get Active with Indoor Sports

Indoor Ice Skating

There are so many fun indoor winter activities that you can do with the whole family. Of course, you can always stay home and binge your favorite family movies together, but if you are looking for a few ways to stay active (without freezing outside), here are some of our favorite ideas:

Ice skating

Many areas offer indoor ice skating classes, as well as free-skate times, so that families can enjoy the ice together. Whether you’ve been ice skating most of your life or you are brand new, you can enjoy hours of fun with your whole family at your local rink.

Laser Tag

Laser tag is a super fun winter activity that is both indoors and active! The minimum age for laser tag varies from 5 years to 7 years, so you will want to double check that your kids are old enough. Laser tag can be a super fun way to spend time together as a family!

Winter soccer league

Many cities have winter soccer leagues that kids and adults of all ages can join. You can stay sharp on your soccer skills, have fun with the family, and enjoy friendly competition all winter long!

Basketball

There are so many indoor gyms that have a basketball court that you can utilize. Check your local YMCA for basketball programs for kids 4-14! This is one of the most popular family activities for winter because it is typically inexpensive, indoors away from the frigid temps, and family members can enjoy playing or observing the game.

Ice Hockey

Whether you want to join a hockey league and get out on the ice yourself or watch a professional hockey game, hockey has long been one of the most popular fun family winter activities.
